Description
The National Institutes of Health, The National Eye Institute (NEI), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Histology Core hereby gives notice of its intent to award a sole source follow- on contract for a base year and two twelve (12 month) option periods with Team Placement located at 2871 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314 for a part- time Histology Technician with experience in performing histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and cytology on patient materials and autopsy eyes, and also perform routine histology and transmission electron microscopy on animal and human specimens. The NEI is a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is responsible for an national and international program for the conduct and support of research on the causes, natural history, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the eye and visual system, and in related fields through: (1) a research program conducted in its own laboratories and through contracts; (2) a program of research grants and individual and institutional research training awards; (3) cooperative agreements, collaboration with voluntary organizations and other institutions engaged in research and training in the special health problems of individuals who are blind or visually impaired; (4) the direction of the National Eye Health Program; and, (5) the collection and dissemination of information on research findings in these areas. The contractor shall: Have minimal two-years� experience in processing human eye tissues, including the whole eye in a CLIA-licensed ophthalmic pathology lab for at least two years. Be able to recognize different ocular tissues on unstained, paraffin-embedded eye sections. Be an ASCP HTL or a certified histology technician. Independently perform the major tasks involved in the routine preparation of histological slides from surgical and necropsy specimens of rodent and human tissues including fixation, dehydration, clearing, embedding, microtomy, mounting and staining of tissue sections, and labeling of finished glass slides. Perform a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning (bone decalcification and sectioning, frozen tissue sectioning, and serial sectioning) and staining (hematoxylin & eosin, periodic acid�Schiff (PAS), and other special stains as needed) techniques to demonstrate a variety of tissue components or materials present in tissues, as required. Receive and organize individual projects for timely histological processing and return of completed projects to investigator (i.e., labeling, boxing, and filing) and to accommodate shifting priorities. Perform Quality Control checks on all completed projects to ensure compliance with investigators� requests, and that the finished slides are of the highest quality. Recommend and communicate with investigators or their designees, on matters concerning their submissions and proper methods for fixation and preparation of rodent and human tissues for histology. Prepare standard laboratory reagents and solutions with utmost precision. Operate basic laboratory equipment, such as tissue processors (standard and microwave), embedder, tissue microtome, tissue stainer and slide cover slipper. Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and observe established safety procedures. This is not a request for competitive proposals.
