PRE-SOLICITATION NOTICE BAIRD AUDITORIUM RENOVATION, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION�S NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, WASHINGTON DC The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is seeking offers to Renovate Baird Auditorium at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code for this action is 236220 and the small business size standard is $45M. PROJECT INFORMATION: The Work includes, but is not limited to: Baird Auditorium, named for the second Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution � Spencer Fullerton Baird - is located on the Ground Floor of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The building was designed by Hornblower & Marshall and was constructed between 1904 and 1911 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The NMNH is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places as a contributing resource to the National Mall Historic District under Criteria A & C. The Auditorium, completed in 1909, was constructed under the direction of Rafael Guastavino using the Catalan terra cotta light weight vaulted tile ceiling system the R. Guastavino Company was famous for. This structural tile system spans 80 feet with a very shallow dome. Due to the age of the space and deferred maintenance issues, it requires a full restoration to meet modern code requirements and new programmatic needs while not detracting from the extraordinary beauty of the space and its character defining features. � Modern infrastructure upgrades � Code compliance improvements � Accessibility upgrades � Structural repairs � Replacement of structural floor slab, stage floor, and mud slab below Auditorium and stage � Modifications and upgrades to all mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection and life safety systems. � Removal of non-historic and incompatible features � Upgrades to theater audio/ visual equipment � Theatrical lighting redesign � Refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing theater seating � Acoustical improvements � Electronic security and telecommunications upgrades. � Repair, restoration, and cleaning of historic Guastavino tile ceiling � Repair, restoration, and cleaning of terrazzo and marble flooring � Rehabilitation of the ancillary spaces adjacent to the Auditorium to support modern greenroom accommodations, dressing room Repair, restoration, and cleaning of terrazzo and marble flooring and accessible restrooms. � Installation of new display cases within ambulatories to provide flexible/ changing exhibits. Critical Elements of the Work: The successful Contractor shall be fully qualified to install critical elements of the Work. Upon request of the Contracting Officer, bidders/offerors shall submit a statement of qualifications to address the following critical elements of the Work: � Slab demolition � Reconstruction of foundation and auditorium floor slabs � Layout of Auditorium floor � Repair, restoration, and cleaning of historic Guastavino tile ceiling � Repair, restoration, and cleaning of terrazzo and marble flooring � Refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing theater seating � Audio/ visual design and equipment for Auditorium � New display cases in ambulatories � New mechanical unit AHU-2 and reconfiguration of AHU-1 Delegated Design Elements of the Work: The Contractor shall furnish full engineering services on the following elements of the Work: � Metal Fabrications: Stairs, Access Ladders, Light Gauge Framing � Pipe & Tube Railings � Decorative Metal Railings � Expansion Fittings and Loops for Hvac Piping � Hangers and Supports for Hvac Piping and Equipment � Hydronic Piping � Hangers and Supports for Electrical Systems The Period of Performance for the Base Contract is 730 Calendar Days from the date of Notice to Proceed. Total Estimated cost range is between is over $10M LOCATION: Project will be located at 10th St. & Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20560. SET ASIDE: Not Applicable THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL. The full solicitation, request for proposals, will be released early April 2025; however, there is no guarantee or implication of a guarantee this this project will be solicited. Responses will be due within (45) days of release. Electronic copies will be uploaded to SAM.gov site. This notice does not obligate the Government to award a contract or otherwise pay for the information provided in response. The Smithsonian Institution will accept proposals from all qualified offerors. The Smithsonian Institution�s evaluation panel will be the sole entity to determine as to whether an offeror is capable of meeting the requirements to carry out contract performance.
